Parenting Through My Experience

Expectant and new mums are bombarded with advice. Family, friends, strangers, Facebook, blogs, websites, parenting books – there is information and advice available in response to any parenting question. Just ask Uncle Google or Aunt Yahoo!.

I read many baby related titles from websites, blogs and books. I read until I found one book/website that suited me and my emotions, and the experiences I was having with my new baby.

During pregnancy, my top pick was About.com-Pregnancy & Childbirth .I enjoyed sharing pregnancy experiences and feelings with other mums who shared the same due date with me.

After giving birth, I found that BabyCenter.com
and The new contented little baby by Gina Ford provided quite useful advice dealing with new baby. Anyway, I later found out that each baby is different. I didn’t follow exactly what I came across from the book/website. I know babies like routine but I didn’t need Gina’s routine. I needed to be sensitive to the cues that my baby was giving to find his natural rhythm and routine.

I learnt to trust my instincts.

A new baby needs mum to be mum, their very own mummy who offers her own baby’s needs. It is not about what decree is right but what is right for that individual mum with her own unique baby. A book that provides a ‘one size fits all’ would certainly make the whole parenting easier but in reality this is impossible.

As JX enters toddlerhood, the book What to expect- the toddler years resonated me. It’s full of information, easy to read and well indexed.

New mums, learn to trust your own instincts as you know your baby best!

P/S- I also read The contented little baby book of weaning by Gina Ford during JX's transition from milk to solid foods. Thanks, Pit for introducing me to this book. ^^

Please leave your comments if you have any good parenting books/websites to share.

Drawing Is Fun!

Colouring is fun for toddler. I realised that toddler tends to choose things that they like to colour (or to be more precise, to scribble on). Thus, I have come out with the idea of creating colouring sheets which have pictures of JX’s favourite.

I managed to get a few large sheets of paper that can cover the whole surface of JX’s working desk from Jusco (6 sheets for only RM 2.60). Forget about the colouring books! The fun started off with the tracing of stars, moons, smiley …

Once the stars and moon tracing excitement was over, Jing Xuan seemed to enjoy the vastness of the drawing area, reaching up to make sure he filled up all area of the paper and drew (I still think, he scribbled) much more complicated images than I saw when he used regular A4 sized paper or on a colouring book.

I know that I have always restricted him to ensure those scribbling not ending up on his desk. This really ‘restricts’ toddler’s fun in drawing. So, get something ‘big ‘for toddler. Who says colouring must be done on colouring book only?

Sundaying

In order not to step on different types of toys parts, long or short, inside the house, I always encourage JX to keep his toys back in the original place after each play. But all his toys are stored in a cabinet and he still needs me to open the door of the cabinet every time when he wants to play or deposit the toys. So, I need to find a storage which is accessible for him to take the toys out and place them in again easily.

Recently, I bought a big plastic container to be used as JX’s toys box. Anyway, I thought the plastic container was plain & boring. Hence I decided to turn it into an alphabet box since JX is currently a big fan of ABC’s.

I got myself some different color round-shaped stickers, which are easily available in any stationery store.

We did some makeover to the container in this lovely Sunday afternoon. JX was very excited when he saw all those bright color stickers. He loves balls & bubbles. Making letters of alphabet out of these colorful round shape stickers would excite him.

At first, I tried to hold his hand to place down each sticker but JX was too excited and wanted to stick them on his own. Hence I pointed to each place and let him try. I understand that his little hand is a bit hard to control. This has ended up with a slanted ‘B’ and extra large ‘O’.

He got bored after half an hour, and it’s mummy and daddy who continued to finish the work.

Beautiful masterpiece by Jing Xuan, me & hubby!
